While Las Vegas is a yearlong travel destination (and with awesome weather coupled with amazing shopping… why shouldn’t it be?), we have now entered the time of the year when tons of folks flock to Sin City for the poolside action. We’ve had a few odd days of cool weather here in Vegas, but the days are warming up, which means tourists and locals alike will be baring lots of skin.
Now, the desert sun in Las Vegas isn’t the same as it is in other areas of the country. It can really take a toll on your skin. One needs to practice special care when dealing with Vegas weather. So for skincare tips and advice, I turned to local skin specialist Shannon Rogers-Levig, owner of Shannon’s Serendipity Skincare (which happens to have a five-star rating on Yelp). Here are her top tips:
- Take preventative measures. According to Rogers-Levig, “It’s important to get facials as a preventative measure against premature aging and dehydration during the long, hot summer months.” She says that the combination of the sun, chlorinated waters, sweat and imbibed alcohol can have an adverse affect on the skin. “Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize and drink lots of water because salt and chlorinated water dries out our skin; hence why we look ashy after a day at the pool,” says the aesthetician.
- Wax it. Smooth, silky skin is essential when hanging poolside. And, of course, a tiny bathing suit calls for a Brazilian wax. “Let’s not forget about the legs and under arms, too,” advises Rogers-Levig. “Shaving can irritate the skin giving a burning sensation when entering salt and chlorinated water. Ouch!”
- Use the right products. Rogers-Levig swears by YONKA beauty products, especially the anti-ageing moisturizer Bonne mine (which also gives the face a sun-kissed tan) and the sunscreen Crème Solaire. Even fashion accessories can save your skin: “Big sunglasses and a floppy hat are great additions to the repertoire,” Rogers-Levig adds.
