Over-the-top, dramatic glamour is not the goal of every fashionista. Many ladies like to keep their wardrobe simple, clean and classy. And those women like to shop Black Halo.
Known for day wear dresses that are designed to flatter the feminine figure by fitting right, Black Halo has ventured into evening wear, at the request of major retailer Neiman Marcus.
“We’re a little indie line,” says fashion designer and Black Halo owner Laurel Berman, “And we’re honored to be hanging in Neiman Marcus.”
Initially intimidated by evening wear, Berman did her research and found that most evening gowns and dresses focused too much on beading and glitz. She spotted a void and filled it with Black Halo evening fashion that is focused on simplicity, clean lines, architecture and high-quality fabric.
“We don’t do a lot of bells and whistles and tchotchkes and beading. What you get with Black Halo is great fabric and great construction and fit, because it’s made in L.A., where we can keep a really close eye on it. We make sure the fit is consistent,” assures the designer. And fit is key, because an ill-fitting dress can add pounds to a woman’s figure and accentuate her flaws rather than her assets.
“There’s always room for the booty and boobies,” Berman further explains her design concept. “Our motto is five pounds thinner and two inches taller. When you put on a Black Halo dress it is really flattering and makes you look your best. We like to nip in around the ribs and the waist, because this is where we’re all tiniest. And then we add room where we need to be more forgiving.”
Curvy celebrity fashionistas Miranda Lambert, Kim Kardashian, Tyra Banks and Fergie are all fans of the label. Known for stunning pencil skirt style dresses, the most popular Black Halo look is The Jackie O, which Berman likes to describe as the power suit for women, adding, “When my customers need to close the deal, they wear The Jackie O. It gives them a sense of empowerment.”
Sizes range from 0-22. Day wear pieces are in the $350 range, while evening wear is priced up to $975. My favorite piece from Black Halo’s holiday evening collection is the Admire Gown (featured below, top of photo). Constructed from stretch velvet, the gown has a halter neckline, deep cut back and a draped wrap skirt for just enough drama.
But I asked Berman which was her favorite and she confessed to a slight obsession with her newest ball gown (shown below in yellow and below that in black). Constructed from a formal fabric that never wrinkles or creases, the gown actually has pockets! “It looks good on any age woman for any event. It’s easy to wear,” comments Berman. “It’s really different than what we’re known for. The customer comes to me for the perfect fitting pencil skirt dress, but every now and then, it’s nice to break out of the box.”
