It’s happening Monday, September 23rd, but are you ready for it? Autumn is here! Do you have your new fall look planned yet?
Lucy Garcia Planck, senior stylist at The John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman, has some insider secrets that she is sharing. One of the looks she is recommending is a haircut with very clean lines.
“If a woman wants to cut her hair short it shouldn’t be too short,” advises Planck. “Aim for a cut that is a little softer around your face. It’s also very important to take care of your hair as you get older so that it doesn’t start to thin or fall out.”
I’m aging. This is disconcerting. What am I supposed to be doing differently to care for my hair than I did 20 years ago? Luckily, Planck has the answers! Here are her hair care tips:
Hair Care
Biotin Supplements
Biotin is a natural supplement that many people don’t get enough of and that could be a contributing factor to dry, brittle hair.
“I always tell my clients to take biotin year round to maintain a strong, healthy glow to their hair and it also helps with split ends,” says Planck. “I love using and always recommend Vitafusion Gorgeous Hair, Skin and Nails is a great-tasting gummy multivitamin containing 12 key nutrients, including Biotin and Vitamins C and E to help nourish beautiful hair, skin, and nails from the inside out.”
Hair Masks
Avocado has fatty acids that make hair soft. Planck recommends that you make a paste with avocado and coconut oil. Combine two teaspoons of avocado (mashed or blended) and one teaspoon of coconut oil. Blend the two together for a few seconds or until smooth.
Adds Planck, “You can even warm up the paste a little bit and leave it in your hair for approximately 30-60 minutes. Start at the top of your roots and work your way down. You can also use aloe vera from a real plant. Using the same ratio of above, mixing the aloe vera with the coconut oil.”
Hair Styles
But what about hair styles? How should we be wearing our hair this season to complement our fall look? Here’s what Planck has to say:
The Bob
“I like it when the bob is straight or one with soft waves in the front. The bob should come to the collarbone, which is most flattering on most people. If you want to take more of a risk, you can cut it to underneath the chin, for someone who has fine, straight hair.”

Curly
“A really popular style if you have really curly hair is to let it air dry naturally, then take a curling iron and use it on the front of your hair just to soften the natural curls.”

Accessories
“Barrettes are a really big trend right now. The more decorative the better. The big trend is to have a ton of soft waves and part hair to one side with a barrette holding the hair back. Adding more than one barrette (layering them) is also very popular this fall.”
SHOP BARRETTES
“Headbands are also very trendy for the fall. Slicking your hair all the way back and putting a big headband—can wear both straight and curly hair in headbands.”
SHOP HEADBANDS
Side Part
“Hairstyles with deep side parts are still very trendy for the fall, as well.”
