Buying a home in Las Vegas proved to be a challenging experience, especially during a pandemic, but I won the battle and settled into my new-to-me abode in November of last year. It is one of the best decisions I have made in my lifetime, and I am utterly the happiest I have ever been living inside this adorable, retro house. As such, decorating and organizing have become my after-work past times, but after finding all the right pieces for my living room, it still felt incomplete. In the right corner of my living room sat a sad, empty spot that needed my attention. So, here’s how I decided to decorate my corner.

I’m not going to lie. I just stared at the corner for, like, ever. For days, I had no clue how to decorate my corner and just begged for inspiration to strike.
Now, in the left corner of this room, I have a bookshelf filled with books. So, I thought, perhaps a place to read would be a good idea. That’s when I knew I needed a chair.
I also had ZERO lighting in my living room. Seriously, I had NONE. I like low light. My eyes hurt with too much lighting, but if I was going to have a reading spot, I knew I had to have some light. Clearly, I had to decorate my corner with a lamp, too.
At this point, I knew I needed a chair and a lamp. However, I like to work in threes, and who doesn’t want to put their feet up when reading? A-ha! An ottoman would complete the setting.
Once I knew which pieces I needed to decorate my corner, I started shopping. The colors of my living room are mainly blue and orange. My sofa is orange, and my rug is a combination of blue and orange-yellow. I firmly decided my chair had to be blue. When I decided on the color, I then evaluated size. It’s not a very large corner. I measured the area and got an idea as to how big my chair could be. At this point, knowing the color and size, my hunt became easier.
I looked online at Target, Wayfair, West Elm, Ikea, Cost Plus World Market, and Pier 1. In the end, the Marlee Club Chair from Pier 1 was my best choice. Unfortunately, it’s no longer available. It was on sale, so they probably discontinued it. I got it for under $200. You can check out Pier 1’s other club chairs here.
I went straight to Lamps Plus for the perfect lamp. Oddly, I couldn’t find a single one I felt was right to decorate my corner, but guess what I did find. The perfect ottoman! Crazy, right?
Finally, I found the ideal lamp at Target, and this is the BEST part. It’s only $60! It’s called the Shelf Floor Lamp by Threshold. It comes in black or brown. I opted for the latter color.
Okay, at this point, I couldn’t just pull the trigger. I had to make sure these pieces would work together. But how? I took screen shots of everything and created a collage using the Over app. I even included a screen grab of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Horse’s Skull with White Rose because I own a framed print of this piece and thought it might complement this decorative grouping.

Once I created the collage, I knew instantly the pieces would amazingly decorate my corner. Boom! I made the purchases with confidence. Here’s the setting now completed. What do you think?

I’m pretty damn elated with the look. In fact, I fell in love with the lamp so much that I decided I needed a second to balance out the room. I mean, at $60 a pop, how could I go wrong?

So, when you find an incomplete area of your home, especially if you need to decorate a corner, plan it out. Think about function followed by color and size. Then, shop around. Consider whether the pieces look good together, as I did when I used the Over app to make a collage. Once you’re confident, go ahead and fill up your shopping carts! You got this.
