Book Review: Single Girl Problems

ShareTweet

Three years into being newly single, I have encountered some frustrating problems, including overly-aggressive men, the disappointment of online dating, and learning how to kill an icky bug by myself. But one thing is for sure: being single, in of itself, is NOT one of them. And that’s the whole point of Andrea Bain’s book Single Girl Problems: Why Being Single Isn’t a Problem to Be Solved.

With a compelling wit and a sharp talent for the written word, Bain is changing the singledom narrative by explaining what single girl problems truly are:

  • The way others view being single as an illness to be cured
  • Being asked prying questions
  • The vacuousness of digital dating
  • Being made to feel like we’re on a deadline to get married and have children
  • The distorted fairytale of love and romance that we’ve been fed since childhood

See, it’s not us, single women, who have a problem. It’s everyone else. And Bain communicating that to her readers, something that I had been feeling but had not really come to terms with and couldn’t put words to, gave me the a-ha moment I’ve needed. There’s nothing wrong with me, but if you have a problem with the fact that I’m pretty, educated, intelligent, funny, charming, kind, and… SINGLE, then that’s your problem, not mine.

Bain eliminates the negative stereotypes of being single by turning the tables and placing the blame for the situation where it belongs—general society and the media. Going out alone, living alone, being able to take care of ourselves are not single girl problems. Single women will no longer be treated as though we need to be fixed. We are not in need of being rescued or improved. We know now what we’ve suspected all along. As Bain eloquently puts it…

SINGLE WOMEN ARE WONDERFUL.

Not only will the reader benefit from Bain’s motivational message and level-headed advice, the book is also peppered with dating horror stories that are completely relatable and familiar. If you’re a single woman and still not convinced that it’s not a problem and that you are wonderful exactly as you are, then I beg you to please pick up Bain’s book ASAP.
